Between working, running a business, family life, and trying to not become a hermit I’m exhausted by Thursday. It takes a lot of effort to make sure that everything gets done. To make sure that my family doesn’t feel neglected, or the laundry gets done (this doesn’t count folding), I work on my business, and I find my selfish moments. I don’t try to do everything, I aim for balance. A little bit of this gets done, a bit of that can wait.
Here are a couple of ways to help you find balance as well:
1. Ask for help. I’ve got so much vying for my attention that it’s a wonder I get anything done, but I let others know when I need help.
They can’t read your mind to know to pick dinner up or to help with the kids unless you say something. Get the kids involved, make it fun, my son has been sorting laundry since he was five, it started as a way to help with colors. My friends and I don’t meet for drinks or dinner, we meet to work on our businesses or to have business dates.
2. Schedule your time. I work in time blocks. I know I can’t do everything, but in the time I do have I make sure I’m as productive as possible. I work on my business from 6-10 during the week, but during the weekends I treat myself to a relaxing Selfish Saturday moment. I live stream during my lunch so I don’t have to worry about it at night. You just have to create a better use of your time.
3. Know what needs to be done. I do a task list every night for the following day. I write the MUST DO items at the top and the rest goes next. I also try not to do everything over the weekend. I wash during on Mondays & Tuesdays. I grocery shop on Friday nights when the stores are freshly stocked waiting for the chaos of the weekends. This allows me to have a bit more me time instead of stuffing my off days, which really aren’t off days, with more than I can handle.
Give yourself permission to know it’s about balance. Everything just may not get done and it doesn’t have to be done by you.
