I’m the first to admit that doing something new makes me uneasy. I could think of 7 reasons why I didn’t have time to do it, 4 reasons why I couldn’t do it, and 26 other self-justified reasons why I hadn’t started but I ultimately realized that it was only 1 thing stopping me. Well 2, me and the excuses I let myself believe.
I realized if I wanted to start taking action I had to do something different. I had to stop allowing the excuses to keep me stagnant. In order to do that I had to shift my mindset from excuse to execution.
When an excuse pops into my head I do these 4 steps to push past it.
1. Stop waiting for the perfect time, the perfect moment, the perfect feeling. There is no such thing as perfect. It’s an excuse I tell yourself to stop me from achieving what I want. I’m an imperfect woman who will never achieve perfection, so I aim for a high level of excellence and push forward.
2. Come up with a solution for the excuse. For every reason why I can’t, won’t, or don’t know how I have to come up with a solution. Whatever obstacle is in my way; I need to find a way around it. I use to say “I didn’t have enough time” until I took a serious look at my schedule. It turns out I was wasting over 40% of my time on things that weren’t making me money, productive, or helping me achieve my goals. Learning and practicing time management skills is a must.
3. Write it down. I write my action plan out. I write my goal out, what I want to happen, how I’m going to accomplish it, and how I’ll know when it’s complete. I break the goal down into each step I need to take to accomplish it. Sometimes I even write my reward out.
Tip: create tasks of what needs to get done each day. This ensures it gets done and you can see what’s complete and what still needs to be done.
4. Get laser focused. I don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of me accomplishing what I set out to do. Not even the excuses I sometimes tell myself why this can’t be done, how I can’t do it, or the fear I have to talk myself out of. Sometimes that means getting alone and getting on my grind to get it done. I will disappear so that my excuses don’t have time to set up. The longer you think about something the more excuses you’ll find. I will go into immediate get ish done mode. Everything must go until my goal is complete.
Since I’ve been doing this I’m amazed at the things I’ve done and am working on, mostly because I didn’t let my excuses get in the way of me accomplishing what I wanted. And I want it all.
